Opera Magazine reviews Roger Doyle’s HERESY

Heresy / Heresy Opera, Roger Doyle /

Opera Magazine

Michael Quinn reviews HERESY in Opera Magazine.

“…a decidedly concentrated experience, characterized by strange, unnerving moods, dislocating effects (electronics and vocals assuming an arch theatricality in wilder moments) and altogether curious atmospheres.”

“Listened to on headphones, there’s something satisfyingly haunting, hallucinogenic even, about it all, its baleful oddness lit up by moments of dark, brittle beauty.”

Classical Ear reviews A Map of the Kingdom of Ireland

Heresy / A Map of the Kingdom of Ireland /

Classical Ear

Michael Quinn reviews Heresy Record’s latest release A Map of the Kingdom of Ireland for Classical Ear.

“17 tracks from a baker’s dozen of cutting-edge talents suggest a varied, vital, thrillingly alive musical terrain teeming with ideas and imagination.”

“…Richard G Evans’s Little Train to Heaven – driven along by scuzzy guitars and the dark percussive pulse of Daniel Figgis’s drumming – is a thing of adrenalized beauty.”

“Figgis’s own 11-minute Timothy Cream’s Crown of Wines is a dazzling exercise in atmospheric fantasy, Donald Teskey’s Arcticus deliciously heady and intoxicating, Princess Tinymeat’s Your Majesty drunkenly fuzzy and fierce.”

“There’s a leavening, becalmed poetry to Paul Morrin’s piano-led Wandering Compass – a flower coming into spectacular bloom.”

“Well worth investigating.”

HERESY reviewed by German magazine AUDIO

Heresy / Heresy Opera, Roger Doyle /

AUDIO Magazine
HERESY review on AUDIO Magazine

Winifried Dulisch reviews Roger Doyle‘s electronic opera HERESY for AUDIO Magazine.

Translation:
In no case was this opera written for traditional opera singers! Roger Doyle has composed his “electronic opera” about the philosopher and free thinker, Giordano Bruno, who was burned at the stake in 1600. The Irish electronic composer even wrote a supporting role for Caitríona O’Leary, who is well known on the early music scene as well as being a folk singer. The backing track was recorded solely with electronic instruments. Instead of merely carrying the listener into meditative realms, Heresy consistently honors the title and dramatic themes of the opera.

A Miscellany of Tasteful… reviews A Map of the Kingdom of Ireland

Heresy / A Map of the Kingdom of Ireland /

Rudy Carrera reviews A Map of the Kingdom of Ireland on his A Miscellany of Tasteful Music/Art/Film/Lit blog-zine.

“…quite a gem”

“It is Daniel Figgis’ piece, Timothy Cream’s Crown of Wines, which really gets into a more freeform composition, referencing avant-garde music and perhaps Krautrock.”

“…Dublin mainstay Roger Doyle.  This is a bit away from the avant-garde – this feels more like a cleaner, more updated sound referencing Tangerine Dream. ”

“The fun surprise of the compilation for me were the two tracks included by Princess Tinymeat…”

Planet Hugill reviews Roger Doyle’s HERESY

Heresy / Heresy Opera, Roger Doyle /

Robert Hugill reviews HERESY on his classical music website Planet Hugill.

“Doyle’s approach to music theatre is somewhat at a tangent to much music theatre and opera today, which is no bad thing.”

“Doyle’s music is the dominant force in the piece, a seductive, highly electronic texture which veers more towards metaphysical meditation than dramatic music theatre.”
